Kroger sees AI shopping assistant driving larger baskets

Kroger plans to add more of its existing personalization capabilities to the assistant, allowing recommendations to reflect individual customers' shopping habits and preferences. Bill Wilson

Kroger customers using the retailer's artificial intelligence-powered shopping assistant are building larger baskets, an early result that surprised the executive overseeing the company's digital strategy.

Yael Cosset, Kroger's executive vice president and chief digital officer, said on Tuesday during the opening session of Groceryshop 2026 in Las Vegas adoption of the shopping assistant has been spread relatively evenly across the grocer's customer segments. He initially expected customers who provided the tool with detailed instructions to purchase fewer products because the assistant would narrow its recommendations.

Instead, removing some of the work involved in planning meals and building a shopping list appears to give customers more time to consider additional purchases.

"That's resulted in an incremental growth in that basket, which is obviously very positive for us as a retailer and also our CPG partners," Cosset said.
