Kroger's battle with price to last multiple years

Kroger aspires to become America's favorite grocer. CEO Greg Foran mentioned it more than once during the retailer's latest earnings call last week. It's a goal that should be tacked on every available company wall.

Foran said the grocer is not following any new ideas, but in-stocks, merchandising, standards and shrink management all need strong execution so customers notice. Kroger expects savings to build through the balance of the year, giving the retailer more ways to pass those savings on to customers.

In the second quarter, on-shelf availability reached an all-time high, and according to Foran, pickup orders were the best ever.

The retailer is trying to be relentless on cost, and sourcing and savings came in ahead of plan in the second quarter. However, Foran said more work remains across sourcing, procurement, productivity and simplification.
