IGA partners on Seattle food desert initiative

The Independent Grocers Alliance (IGA) is partnering with the city of Seattle on a project to support local grocery stores in underserved areas.

IGA will conduct a series of grocery store market analyses in eight neighborhoods, the Seattle Office of Economic Development said. These studies will analyze the potential for a new grocery store and determine which types of grocery retail are best suited for different neighborhoods based on each community's needs and existing access to food.

The studies support an effort to help grocery stores expand into underserved communities, according to the Seattle OED.

"IGA has supported independent grocers for 100 years," said John Ross, president and CEO, IGA. "Our partnership with the city of Atlanta, Invest Atlanta and Savi Provisions to launch Azalea Fresh Market showed what public-private partnerships can do to improve community food access.
